26th February
Mourning the loss of a very dear parishioner, Patrick Hassett, who died in London on the 1st December 2005.
A well-known character in the Westminster Diocese, Patrick was a loquacious Irishman who literally haunted Westminster Cathedral.
No special Mass took place without his presence. He frequented Vespers on a regular basis. Cardinal Hume used to say of him that wherever he went in the Diocese, there was Patrick.
His abiding interest was the Church and the workings of the Church. A daily listener to Vatican Radio, he knew of the election of bishops before the official announcements had been made. In his breathless way, he would buttonhole you and give you the news.
Some people might have found him a little oppressive but he was a genial character who meant no harm. If you said with a smile he must go away, he would accept that.
Like many bachelors his life was an enigma, because there was no one else to explain him. Many people have different parts of his jigsaw. It would be interesting to put together these parts.
